Fabric Marbling Workshop

HUNTSVILLE — Huntsville artist Tamara Chasteen will host a weekend fabric marbling workshop March 5-7 at the Wynne Home Arts Center.
The program will include three days of education on the marbling technique, a method of manipulating paint to dye fabrics to produce a marble-like appearance, and includes two meals.

The fee for the program is $150 plus the cost of fabric. All interested parties are urged to contact Chasteen at (936) 661-1779 or woollady@hotmail.com to register prior to the workshop. The workshop is limited to ten students.

The weekend will begin Friday evening with a supper followed by an initial dying session in which Chasteen will provide an introduction to the marbling method.

“Marbling is a really fun technique that utilizes the surface tension of liquids to float paint,” Chasteen said. “And then you draw patterns in the floating paint and lay the fabric you want to print on top.”

According to Chasteen the technique is very versatile, and can be applied to a variety of fabrics as well as paper.

Saturday will be a full day of marbling, and Sunday will conclude the workshop with a brunch.

The workshop is the latest in a series of Chasteen workshops in the fiber arts that she is calling “Best of the Seasons.” Previous workshops included a Shibori dyeing workshop and a weaving workshop. The next in the series will be a Batik dyeing workshop set for May.
