Considered as one of the wonders in Chinese traditional culture, the art of making purple clay teapots has a special place in the long history of ceramic-making in China which can be traced back as far as the mid-Northern Song Dynasty, about 1000 years ago. It has since matured into a fine art following the improvement of the people’s living standards and material wealth.

The three purple clay artists in this exhibition were brought up in families that have produced pottery for generations. They inherited the orthodox teaching of the art and combined the spirit of contemporary artists and traditional techniques, creating a series of potteries that are amusing and innovative, yet maintaining the gist of traditions. In 2009, the trio met a renowned Hong Kong calligrapher Mr. Lam Yut Hang, and they were highly inspired by Mr. Lam’s ingenious knowledge and skill that eventually led to the idea of organising this exhibition which combines the art of pottery-making and calligraphy.

In this exhibition, Mr. Lam will exhibit approaching 80 pieces of calligraphic works and more than 50 pieces of Mr. Xu Yi, Mr. Xiong Jiangping and Mdm. Li Huifang’s purple clay teapots bearing Mr. Lam’s calligraphy. This exhibition allows art lovers a chance to appreciate the masterpieces with a different flair.

In conjunction with the exhibition, there will be an art talk after the opening ceremony, details as follows:

It was rare and respect-worthy to find someone who has spent his entire life

in pursuit of the pinnacle of art, despite of all the hardships and

obstacles he met.

In 1964, Tan Tong obtained a scholarship from the French Government to begin

pursuing his dream in becoming a great artist. Not many people knew that he

had only USD70 to take to France. In classes, he imitated the artworks of

Ingres, Pablo Picasso and other great artists. In 1974, he received French

government’s diploma in painting, and the following year, he obtained a

diploma in sketching. In 1967 he held his first ever solo exhibition in

Montparnasse, Paris. He returned to Malaysia in 1976, and began lecturing at

Malaysia Institute of Art, a dedication to art education that was to last

for 25 years.

Tan Tong’s art is unique, authentic, independent, rigorous and

pure-characteristics resulting from 47 years of hard work at painting,

studying, writing and researching. In the process he had rejected all

meaningless social activities, enabling him to personalise his spiritual

world and this is reflected in his works. It is a priceless way of life to

be able to do the things one wishes. He trusts his feelings, believes in his

ideology, psyche and does not mind what others think of him, or if they

could understand or like his works. Each artwork is a complete commitment

and serious vision to explore the most appropriate way of presentation. Each

one is a fruit of his unceasing effort and relentless struggle.

In this exhibition, Tan Tong sincerely and selflessly selected 80 invaluable

masterpieces he has created from 1963 to 2011 to be exhibited. These are the

products of his heart and soul. Meanwhile, he would like to take this

opportunity to pay his utmost gratitude to the masters who have taught him

and offer thanks to friends and relatives who helped him along the way. He

further wishes that his years of struggle and strong conviction in

art-creation will instil in youths noble ambitions to aspire to become

artists.

Profiles of the Artist:

Tan Tong

Born in 1942 in Kajang, Selangor, Tan Tong was suddenly interested in art

when he reached the age of 18. He obtained a degree in sketching from Paris

National Art University in 1974; and a degree in painting in 1975. He

returned to Malaysia in 1976, and began lecturing at Malaysia Institute of

Arts in 1977. After retiring at 60 years-old, he went full-time in

researching the art of Picasso. His early works include “Europe Series”,

“Series on YiChing and the eye of the Buddha”, “The Series on the Symphony

of Yin and Yang”, “Picasso series”, “Consort Yang series”, “Beijing Olympics

Series” and later on, “The Artist and his Models Series”.

With reference the artist’s “Palette Series”, our art instructor will be

guiding you on how to expand your imagination and creativity by painting on

different surfaces and irregular shapes. Seat are limited; reservation by

first come serve basic.

GALERI PETRONAS will launch IRRESISTIBLE WEAR, an exhibition about clothing the human body with art.

It showcases 48 new works created by 12 textile and fashion designers artists: Datuk Radzuan Radziwill, Datin Sharifah Kirana, Edric Ong, Faizal Abdul Hamid, Adnan Hassan, Akma Suriati, Asliza Aris, Zainol Salleh, Eddie Yap, Fion Poon, Associate Professor Hasnul Jamal Saidon and Abdul Hamid Hassan.

All of the designers and artists injected their expertise, creativity and imagination into their respective creations through the perspective of fine art.

As a perfect marriage of high-end fashion and the art of human technology, local eyewear brand TonySame proudly sponsors Mr Gary Mok, the renowned Hong Kong artist’s latest solo exhibition, “Turn Around”.  The exhibition presents his latest work from 2010 to 2011 at Schoeni Art Gallery (Old Bailey Street, Central).  Gary’s creations are mostly inspired by the dramatic international news photography, highlighting his observations on the relationship amongst the modern society, media and audience, arousing the public on the “visual authenticity” .

About Gary Mok

Mok Wai Hong is a Hong Kong artist. Upon graduating from the Central Academy of Fine Arts in Beijing with bachelor’s degree in 2007, his works have met with critical acclaim and is one of the select few to have been nominated as a finalist for the Sovereign Asian Art Prize in 2005, 2006 and 2009. Mok’s style is characterised by its emphasis on Hong Kong and China, within its vernacular topography and cityscape. As a native of the former colony, Mok sheds keen psychological insight into the mentality of the “Hongkonger”. Calmly and consciously, he poses on his canvases thoughtful questions about the undergoing transitions and changes of the society in which he lives in.

China’s 1911 Revolution was one of the most important events in contemporary history of China. Ending the feudal system that ruled China for over 2000 years, the revolution was best remembered for turning China into a republic, earning praises and imprinting deep memories for the future generations. In memory of the 100^th Anniversary of the Revolution, Mr. Zhou Junjie, a renowned calligrapher from China, together with Dr. Foo Yong Kong, a renowned calligrapher and painter from Malaysia, will hold a joint exhibition of calligraphic works in Kuala Lumpur, to commemorate the spirit and wisdom of China’s 1911 Revolution through the unique expression of calligraphic art.  This is truly an exceptional and significant event, which will definitely open up a beautiful chapter in the history of the calligraphy exchange between Malaysia and China.

Mr. Zhou Junjie is currently holding the post of Honorary Chairman for Calligraphy Association of Henan Province and Vice General Director for International Cultural Exchange Center of Henan Province. Zhou Jun Jie, a scholar from Central China, has a rich cultural background and is resolutely and industriously committed to the art of calligraphy. He has initiated efforts in building both the creative and theoretical aspects of calligraphic art to new heights. He has been being commended as not only the representative of Henan calligraphy, but also the representative of calligraphers of the whole nation.

Dr. Foo Yong Kong is the President of Malaysia Contemporary Chinese Painting & Calligraphy Association. His creative calligraphy can be basically divided into three categories: Firstly, the Neo-Classic style; secondly, the Contemporary Little Verse Scripts and thirdly the combination of ink and rich colours style, resulting in a signature style of his own.  The boldness and innovation in his calligraphy reflects his efforts to enhance the universal visual expression.  He believes that “artist should interpret creativity with contemporary perspective.  It is necessary for the artwork to be imbued with contemporary style and colour as this will arouse resonance with others and lead us to continue our exploration together.”

From the 60 over calligraphic works of Mr. Zhou and Dr. Foo to be on displayed, the commonality of their works is the combination of traditional skills with bold and unrestrained spirit, richness, vitality and personal styles. They are also contemporary artists who epitomize the senses of life of present times. With these credentials, they present to the viewers the wisdom, culture, history, tradition, aesthetic, temperament and interest of the calligraphy of present times.

On the opening day, there will be an art talk entitled “The Study and Creation of Calligraphic Works” at 5.00pm, delivered by Mr Zhou Junjie.  Besides that, there will be two guided tour sessions and live calligraphy demonstration by Dr. Foo Yong Kong on the following dates during the exhibition period:

辛亥革命是中国近现代史上最重要的历史事件之一，它以结束两千多年的封建制度，将中国引向共和的伟业而为后世所铭记和歌颂。2011年值辛亥革命一百周年之际，中国著名书法家周俊杰先生与马来西亚著名书画家符永刚博士在首都吉隆坡举办书法联展，以书法的独特艺术形式，表述辛亥革命的精神与智慧，实属意义非凡，必将为马中两国书艺交流史上掀开绚丽的华章。

周俊杰先生，现为河南省书法家协会名誉主席、河南省国际文化交流中心副理事长。周氏数十年来，以其丰厚的文化底蕴、满腔的创作热情和异常的勤奋，划动起书法创作和理论研究的双楫，在创、研两方面均取得了为世瞩目的成就。他曾被评为不仅是中国河南的代表书家，也是整个书坛的代表书家。

符永刚博士，现为马来西亚国际现代书画联盟总会长。他的书法创作包含了新古典、现代少字书及墨与浓郁色彩混融的表现形式，独创了他个人的艺术语言,也展现了书法性的现代艺术。他在书艺上的大胆尝试与创新，是他融入国际主流艺术的努力的体现。他认为：“艺术家要以现代眼光诠释创作，作品当中必须要注入当代风格、色彩才能引起共鸣，有了共鸣，这条路才不会寂寞，而且继续发展探索下去！”

纵观即将展出的周俊杰先生与符永刚博士60余幅的书法作品，他们作品的共同特征是豪放、博大而充满灵气，具有坚实的传统功力，又具强烈的时代感和独特的个人风格。相信将带给观者一次集智慧、文化、历史、传统与具时代感的书法审美情趣。欢迎各位书艺同好与爱好艺术的社众踊跃拨冗出席观赏和不吝赐教。

Ikat textiles are found in cultures all over the world. Ikat is being woven in Argentina, Bolivia, Ecuador, Guatemala and Mexico and also in Uzbekistan in Central Asia. India, Japan and several South-East Asian countries have long histories of Ikat production. Among the most admired ikat come from the island of Sumba and also from Sarawak.  The pua kumbu shares many similarities with the hinggi of Sumba, yet the legends, symbolism and rituals that surrounding the two vary.

The panel of speakers will deliberate on the development of the weaving and lifestyles of the Sumbanese and Ibans. They will also examine the balance between aesthetics and practicality of these ikat textiles.

Dr Aruna will explore the history of the saree and the tying of this strip of unstitched cloth, ranging from four to nine metres in length that is draped over the body in various styles among the Indian community in Malaysia. Her talk will be accompanied by a fashion showcase of this traditional draped clothing – the Saree.

Introducing PROF. DR. ARUNA GOPINATH

Prof. Dr. Aruna Gopinath was born in Kuala Lumpur. She graduated from the University of Malaya with a B.A. degree in 1974 and was awarded the M.A. degree in 1978. Dr. Gopinath taught at the Department of History, University of Malaya since 1974 and in 2007 retired after a service of 32 years. She has travelled extensively and taught at several universities as a Visiting Professor in Southeast Asian Politics and Conflict Studies. She has received several awards for her contribution in the fields of history, political science and international relations. In 1991, she was a Visiting Fellow at Cornell University and also taught at both the American University and George University. She was a recipient of the prestigious British Chevenning Award in 1997 and was a Visiting Professor at SOAS, University of London; LSE; University of Oxford ; University of Cambridge; University of Hull; University of Warwicks, Coventry; University of Auckland, Wellington and Christchurch in 1986/7. She has published extensively and has written 6 books, 80 articles and 4 monographs. Dr. Gopinath is a resource person and consultant on Southeast Asian affairs with the Gordon Business School, South Africa. She is currently a Senior Fellow at the National Defence University of Malaysia, Kuala Lumpur. She is also a trained Indian classical dancer.

Who is Cedric Tan ?

Cedric Tan is a 6th generation Baba from Malacca and is actively researching and promoting Baba & Nyonya culture in Malaysia and Singapore. He has been a culture consultant in most Baba & Nyonya events in Malaysia, amongst which include the promotion of Nyonya Kebayas by the late YABhg Datin seri Endon Mahmood and various Peranakan exhibitions in Muzium Negara, Kuala Lumpur. He is reviving the traditional Baba wedding and actively shares his thoughts and articles on the culture in the quarterly Peranakan newsletter issued by the Singaporean Peranakan Association.  He is also the Honorary Secretary of the Peranakan Baba Nyonya Association of Kuala Lumpur and Selangor.

In order to enhance friendly exchanges of the art of photography between Malaysia and Hong Kong, SGM and the Photography Society of Malaysia are jointly organizing the exhibition “Photo Impressionism – A Photographic Exhibition by LEO Wong K.K.” Dr. Wong is a renowned salon photographer, presently holding the position of Honorary President of the Photographic Society of Hong Kong, Honorary President of the Photographic Salon Exhibitor’s Association, Hong Kong and Senior Member of British Royal Photography Association.  He won the first prize in the international salon competition four times and is an acclaimed photographer internationally.  He is particularly skilled in taking landscape photography and is highly regarded in the milestone of China’s history of photography.

Dr. Wong was touched and encouraged by a seven-year-old visitor to one of his exhibitions who wrote in the guest book: “I didn’t know nature is so beautiful. I will protect it even more in the future.” Since then, he has been even more immersed in nature. Each frame and each photograph in this collection represents a personal response to the fleeting light and shade. He therefore dedicates this series of exhibits to the young friends, with the hope that one day they will experience first-hand the joy of commuting with nature through lenses.

In conjunction with the exhibition, Dr. Leo Wong will be delivering an art talk, sharing his thoughts and discoveries in his life of photography. The details of the art talk are as follows:

为促进马来西亚与香港的摄影艺术交流、提升我国的摄影水平与推广摄影活动，马来西亚创价学会与马来西亚影艺协会联合主办香港著名摄影师黄贵权医生的摄影作品展，为大马社众展示题他独具一格的“象幻情真”摄影作品系列。黄贵权医生是香港资深的沙龙摄影家，现为香港摄影学会名誉会长、香港沙龙影友协会名誉会长、英国皇家摄影学会高级会士。他曾四次名列世界沙龙摄影比赛第一名， 在国际摄影界颇负盛名。尤在风景摄影创出独特的成就，被誉为“中国艺术摄影史上的里程碑人物”。黄医生叙述他曾经受到一位7岁的孩子在参观了他的摄影展后的留言：“原来大自然是这样的美丽，我以后要更爱护大自然”，深深被感动和鼓励了他继续在大自然奔走。黄氏在拍摄这一系列展品的期间，运用了几种不同的摄影技巧，希望在大自然的一瞬间，演绎自己的“印象”，抒发自己的感情。他真诚希望这一系列的作品能献给还可以多看大自然的幼者，去感受和珍惜这美丽的大自然。

配合此项展览，黄医生将于开幕后为爱好摄影的社众一同分享他的摄影心得和发现，讲座详情如下，欢迎爱好摄影艺术的社众踊跃出席聆听交流。

At the same time, there will be another photographic exhibition entitled “Transcending Boundaries to Glory – The Photographic Society of Malaysia 55th Anniversary Exhibition” which will be held on the 7th floor during the same exhibition period. In commemorating the 55th anniversary of The Photographic Society of Malaysia, members of the society will exhibit 100 pieces of their works at Wisma Kebudayaan SGM to celebrate the significant occasion.  Since the inception of PSM in 1956, more than half a century ago, members of the Society have acted as flag bearers of the people’s culture, continuing to spread the art of photography far and wide.  All are welcome to view the exhibition.

The exhibition of 60 photographs celebrating Malaysian cinematic icon, the late Tan Sri P. Ramlee will show scenes from the legendary actor-singer-composer’s films from 1949 to 1973, as well as other more intimate images such as that of P.Ramlee in his role as a film director. All photographs are from the personal collection of Tun Ahmad Sarji bin Abdul Hamid.

Tun Ahmad Sarji has held a life-long admiration of P. Ramlee; this exhibition and publication of the biographies are his personal tribute to P. Ramlee’s life and talent.

The exhibition will be officially launched on Friday 24 June 2011 at 3.15pm, in conjunction with the re-launch of two biographies on P. Ramlee written by Tun Ahmad Sarji. “P. Ramlee: Erti Yang Sakti” (1999) and “P. Ramlee: The Bright Star” (2003), covering P. Ramlee’s on-screen life, his films and songs, as well as offer information of P. Ramlee, the man. These books have been reprinted and will be available as a box set.

A not-to-be-missed event especially for the P. Ramlee fan.

Kamsiah will talk on the textile trade of 15th-16th century that underpinned the importance of Malacca as the centre of the ‘maritime silk route’. The talk will focus on the textiles which Europe so desired, so new to them – satin, taffeta, chintz and shining cloth from India – and cotton so gossamer that  ‘a hundred yards of it could pass through the eye of a needle’. This talk is in-conjunction with the publishing of her book Malacca – A Romance.

Introducing HWEI-FE’N CHEAH
Hwei-fe’n Cheah studied art history at the Australian National University where she currently teaches Asian art and textile history. She is particularly fascinated by needlework and its infinity of tiny details. She is also the author of ‘Pheonix Rising. Narratives in Nyonya Beadwork from the Straits Settlements.

Goethe-Institut is opening yet another Cityscapes Exhibition on Kuala Lumpur, the fourth in sequence after “Mapping Invisible Cities” (GI SEA), “Creative Economies”(ASEF), and ” Beyond Our City: Lights and Myths”, this time by the title of “Metaphorical Garden”.

This exhibition is showcasing the works from a group of photographers calling themselves The Shooting Stars. Under the expert guidance from their mentors Azrul Abdullah, Eiffel Chong, Alex Moh and Khairul Azril, these photographers are in search of gardens, metaphorically speaking. The exhibition of 50 photos can be seen at the KL City Library Gallery (next to Dataran Merdeka) from 26 May (Official Opening at 8.30pm) to 26 June accompanied by a Sound installation on 25 June at 8.30pm by Marc Behrens.

The “Seeds of Hope” exhibition stresses our interconnectedness with the rest of the community of life and the need to broaden our sphere of compassion and concern. It encourages viewers to overcome feelings of powerlessness and highlights the fact that a single individual can initiate positive change.

It also introduces the positive vision for sustainable living expressed in the Earth Charter, and gives examples of eight individuals and groups who have successfully taken action for change, from Africa to the Arctic and Eastern Europe. The message “It starts with one,” is key — the slogan that the Earth Charter International has chosen for their “Earth Charter Plus 10″ campaign in 2010, to celebrate the Charter’s 10^th anniversary.

The “Seeds of Hope” exhibition contains 24 panels and available in 3 languages (English, Bahasa Malaysia and Chinese). The exhibition uses the “Learn, Reflect, Empower” formula outlined in SGI President Daisaku Ikeda’s 2002 proposal on education for sustainable development and is a tool for the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development (DESD).  President Ikeda said: “There are all sorts of revolutions, but no matter what one changes, the world will never get any better as long as people themselves remain selfish and lacking in compassion.”

Key features of the exhibition:

v  The initial section introduces the idea of interconnection with inspiring quotes from different spiritual and religious traditions.

v  The exhibition stresses that sustainability is not only about the protecting the environment but also ensuring social justice and peace.

v  It introduces the Earth Charter and links the individual principles of the Earth Charter to the positive case studies.

v  It gives concrete ideas of what one person can do, and provides space for people to pledge what action they will take.

v  A special feature to appeal to children is the inclusion in the bottom half of each panel of an inset featuring an endangered or unusual animal.

“希望的种子”和平展强调人类与各生命体的相互关联，为此扩展自己的慈悲与关怀之心是必要的。展览的讯息鼓励观者克服无力感，并相信一个人可以带来正面的改变。

此项展览介绍了《地球宪章》对可持续未来的展望，同时展示了8个来自非洲到北极和东欧透过个人和小组的实际行动取得改变的成功例子。 展览中的关键性讯息为“从一开始”– 同时也是2010年为庆祝《地球宪章》10周年纪念发起“地球宪章十年回顾”运动的口号。

“希望的种子”和平展共有24个展板，备有三语版本（英文、国文和中文）。此展览所运用之“学习、反省、赋予行动力”三阶段的方程式，是源自国际创价学会会长池田大作于2002年“可持续发展世界首脑会议”召开之际，就“可持续发展教育”所提出的建言。池田先生曾说：“世上有许多种革命，但不论想改变的是什么，若是人本身依然自私及缺乏慈悲，世界不会变得更好。”为了自己、地球及未来世代，我们可以打开心扉，扩展自己的慈悲心去关怀、採取具体的行动！

展览重点：

v 展览中所传达的可持续性并非局限于环境的保护，同时也必须确保社会的正义与和平。

v 展览中介绍了《地球宪章》，以及积极实践《地球宪章》原则的个人或团体的成功个案，令人鼓舞。

v 展览提供了每一个人可以如何行动的明确指引，并鼓励观者要坚信一个人的正面改变，可以带来全球性的变革。所以，切勿小看自己微小的行动，而必须持之以恒。

v  此项展览也特别为小朋友设计了教育性的一环，即在每一个展览板的下端，都会介绍一种频临绝种或稀有动物。

KL International Photoawards began in 2009, and is an annual worldwide competition in search of the best in contemporary portrait photography, attracting as many as 1,700 entries from over 40 countries. Showcasing some of the leading and emerging photographers, the 2011 Awards have just been judged by a team of 5 international and local judges from related disciplines.

The Winners for the Portrait Individual Category, Portrait Story Category, ASI Most Promising Photographer Under 25 and the People’s Choice prize will be announced at the KL International Photoawards 2011 Awards & Opening Night on 19 April, Tuesday, 2011 at 8:00 PM at White box, MAP, Solaris Dutamas 1, Jalan Dutamas 1, 50480 Kuala Lumpur.

This year KL International Photoawards has partnered Anti-Slavery International, the UK’s oldest human rights organisation in hope to inspire photographers, whether they are established or aspiring, to take that photo, and in turn for their vision to move the rest of the world.

The 3rd KL International Photoawards Exhibition hopes to show the ‘human’ in ‘human rights’ through a selection of the best entries for this year. This years’ selection will be featuring 45 finalists from the Individual Portrait Category and 10 Finalists from the Portrait Story Category, which also includes the Most Promising Photographer Under 25.

National Textile Museum

TITLE : Spotlight on Southeast Asian Tie Dyed Textiles

“Spotlight on Southeast Asian Tie Dyed Textiles”  will start off with a basic description of the techniques and images of a number of textiles from  Malaysia, Sumatra  and Cambodia patterned in this technique. An outline of her research interest  in these particular textiles which arose from a collection of  textiles patterned by the plangi and tritik technique  with pictorial scenes in the collection of the National Museum in Phnom Penh.  The pictorial representations  on these textiles, though with a Cambodian vision, seem to relate closely in subject matter to Javanese north coast batik cloth of the same era  - late 19th/early 20th C.  Others in this collection have geometric, non-pictorial patterns which  relate to those on Sumatran plangi/tritik patterned textiles. These relationships are explored.

Introducing GILLIAN GREEN

Dr Gillian Green has a Master’s degree in Art History from the Australian National University. She wrote the book “Traditional Textiles of Cambodia” which won the RL Shep award for 2004 awarded by the Textile Society of America. She has published in academic journals and lectured in Australia, the USA, UK and Southeast Asia.  She is an Honorary Associate in the Department of Art History and Theory, University of Sydney, Australia.

Who is Liz Williamson?

Liz Williamson is an internationally respected textile artist who began weaving in the late 1970s. Her work reflects a long standing interest in the history, use and construction of cloth itself. She has designed for industry, produced unique works for major exhibitions and maintained ongoing studio production, specializing in hand-woven scarves and wraps, since establishing her own studio in 1985.

Passionately researched over three decades, her knowledge and skills in relation to textiles are a remarkable resource. In her work she embraces some of the oldest techniques of her craft along with new and innovative computer aided processes. Williamson’s work is represented in most major public collections in Australia including the National Gallery of Australia, the National Gallery of Victoria and the Powerhouse Museum.

In 2008, following more than two decades of dedicated teaching at universities in Melbourne, Canberra and Sydney, Williamson was appointed as Head of the School of Design Studies at the College of Fine Arts, University of New South Wales, Sydney. She has presented numerous guest lectures and workshops in Europe, Asia, North America and here in Australia where she continues to be a tireless advocate for the contemporary craft and design sector.

In 2007 Liz was selected for the prestigious Living Treasures : Masters of Australian Craft series, an award given by Object Gallery and Craft Australia acknowledging her 30 years contribution to the craft and design sector through her practice, education and advocacy.

Liz Williamson : Textiles her solo exhibition opened at Object Gallery in November 2008 before touring Regional Galleries nationally during 2009, 2010 and 2011. Dr Grace Cochrane is the author of the publication with the same name.

Who is GM Choo?

GM Choo has had a great interest in art since his childhood days and also had dreams of accomplishing great achievements in the field of art.  Since then, he has never stopped painting and after thirty years of hard work and experience, his dream became a reality following the establishment of GM CHOO ART GALLERY in Malacca, a town which was recently declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage site.

With his artistic talents and skills, Choo easily expresses his love of nature by painting fishes, mountains, rivers, rocks in his batiks. Having grown up in a fishing village, he is passionate about fishes and the subject matter of his paintings has always evolved around all kinds of fishes, especially Japanese Koi Fish.

With Choo’s interest in art and also his determination to achieve greater success, we can expect more beautiful pieces of artworks from him in the near future.  In fact, he is still learning at his old age and continues to improve himself everyday in order to produce more genuine, creative and wonderful pieces of art.

Constantly lost for words, Keith Tang would transpire his notes into visual art forms that only he could decipher the meaning behind his drawings. From drawing random pictures to doodling his interpretations, this was how Accidental Arts began! A true depiction of Keith’s life based on his personal diary, every art-piece is a personal interpretation, a true story told through the eyes of art, painting you a thousand words of emotions and feelings at a specific moment in his life.

Come embark on this artistic journey with Keith as he shares personal stories with you for the first time ever through his showcase of masterpieces.

Dr. Daisaku Ikeda’s Award Winning Children Animated Series is back again!

Dr. Daisaku Ikeda’s award winning children animated series will be on air again at ntv7 during the forthcoming school holidays

every Saturday from 2.00pm to 2.30pm, beginning 13 November 2010.

The 5 stories with 7 episodes will be dubbed in Mandarin with Malay subtitles and will be broadcasted in a series entitled

“Like Me, Like You : The World in Your Heart”. This is the second collaboration between Soka Gakkai Malaysia and ntv7.

The objectives of this broadcast are:

1)        To promote universal values such as the preciousness of life, the importance of compassion and courage, the beauty of human character, friendship and love.

2)        To impart to the children and instill in their hearts an unwavering commitment to peace and a vision of a beautiful world.

3)        To cultivate in the lives of the children the seeds of justice, courage, hope, earnestness and kindness.

About the Author

DR. DAISAKU IKEDA, PRESIDENT OF SOKA GAKKAI INTERNATIONAL

The author, Dr. Daisaku Ikeda, born in Tokyo on 2 January 1928, is a well-known Japanese philosopher, peace builder and educator who is also the founding president and leader of the Soka Gakkai International (SGI), a Buddhist network with 12 million members in 192 countries and territories. Dr. Ikeda’s literary focus has always been literature for young children – a genre in which he first honed his writing talents as an editor of a children’s magazine while in his early twenties. He has written 24 children’s books, which have been translated into numerous languages. Many of them have been made into animated films and applauded for their positive influence on young viewers.

A series of 12 of his animated stories won the Anak TV Broadcasters’ Award from the Philippines-based Southeast Asian Foundation for Children’s Television in 2005. The Anak TV Broadcasters’ Award is the highest honour given by Philippine broadcasters for significant contributions by individuals to the betterment of Philippine broadcasting, especially for children’s programs. Selected films from the series were also previously broadcasted in 24 countries including Panama, India, Sri Lanka, Iceland, Spain and Australia where they received acclaims.

关于作者

国际创价学会会长池田大作博士

池田大作博士1928年1月2日生于日本东京，是一位哲学家、和平运动家和教育家。他创办了国际创价学会――一个会员遍及全球192个国家与地区的佛教组织。池田博士现为该组织的会长。池田博士人生的一个文学重点正是儿童文学――一个在他二十出头的时候，身为少年杂志的编辑，第一次让他磨练文笔的领域。

迄今他已著作了24部童话作品，他的童话作品被翻译成多种语言出版。与此同时，改编自这些作品的动画片也获得许多好评。池田博士创作童话的12篇作品曾受菲律宾颁发2004年度“儿童电视播放奖”。这个荣誉是菲律宾“东南亚儿童电视基金会”设立的，颁赠对于儿童节目有卓越贡献的人物。此外，池田博士的童话动画系列亦也曾在香港、智利、巴拿马、冰岛、西班牙、澳洲等24国播出，影片广受好评。

“One may be talented, but you need true passion, dedication and perseverance to be successful. My drive to paint is still burning strong. As my art gets more refined, I become more and more inspired by my technique,” he says at his home gallery in Bangsar, Kuala Lumpur.

Sam, 65, is referring to dyetik, a technique that produces fine details not commonly seen in traditional batik works – which have cracked lines, fragmented colour planes and defined, stark outlines.

Dyetik involves placing little dots on the material to form the desired image, à la Pointillism (a technique developed by Georges Seurat in the late 19th century). The result is a uniform mottled surface glow that Sam effortlessly tweaks to incorporate depth and dimension to his paintings. Unlike traditional batik techniques, he uses relatively less wax and more dye in his works.

“I chanced upon this technique in 1980 while experimenting with several others. I knew this was what would set me apart from the other artists,” says Sam, who has been using dyetik in his works ever since.

The Perak-born artist started out with watercolour and oil in the 1960s before exploring the world of batik art. After his last solo exhibition in Malaysia in the early 1970s, he spread his wings and held shows abroad, including in Australia, Thailand and Singapore.

Sam is inspired by the work of other batik artists, like Ibrahim Khalid, Lim Khoon Hock, Tay Mo Leong and the late Chua Thean Teng,

He has spent 17 years teaching and training artists and batik enthusiasts, but jealously guards the workings of his self-created dyetik.

“I have never taught the technique to anyone. I’ve been told to patent it but I think it’s not necessary because it is not that easy to reproduce. It’s also time-consuming and requires lots of patience.”

A painting can easily take up to four months to complete. What’s more, he rips about one out of every six of his paintings to shreds and chucks them out the window.

“I never paint just for the sake of painting. Sometimes the subject you are working on just dies and you don’t have the burning inspiration to finish it. When a painting isn’t working out the way I want, I simply discard it and start something new.”

He is not worried about losing the desire to paint because there is really no end to the possibilities of this technique and likens working on a painting to scaling a mountain.

“I only work on one painting at a time. It’s like climbing a hill – you know what you’re doing and you have a specific goal. And you won’t stop until you’ve reached your goal.”

His next exhibition, The Dream that Never Dies, is just another stepping stone to taking this medium to new heights.

“My next stop will probably be Moscow, and I also plan to hold exhibitions in India, China and the Middle East. I want to explore places that not many people have been to,” he says.

ARCHETYPOS

Swiss-born but a longtime Colorado City resident, Dr. Claudine Jeanrenaud is a Jungian psychologist with many years of academia and practice behind her.  She is also well-known in this area for her “Unconscious Art” and her courses in dream analysis.  Her own personal dream, however, has long been to create a space for the exploration of Art in all its myriad forms, a safe area where art can be experienced as it ought to be, both through exhibition and through practice.  To this end, she is opening “ARCHETYPOS EVENT GALLERY”, an exhibition space to fill a void in Colorado City, a non-profit organization to encourage the Arts in the area and a place where artists and supporters of the Arts can connect with one another.

Claudine declares:

“As a child, I always had a dolls house with the most precious objects I owned in it and to me, it felt like a Fairyland in my bedroom.  As an adult, I founded ARCHETYPOS in Denver as an Art and Dream Study Center and the new gallery is an extension of this in the Greenhorn Valley”.

The first exhibition at ARCHETYPOS will be “Four Eyes on India”, a collection of the unique and original Batik Paintings of Beth and Jonathan Evans, as well as beautiful imported fabrics that the Evans’ have brought back from their travels and which they normally sell under the business name “Shalawalla Imports”.  The paintings are all created in and about India and feature portraits of local villagers, landscapes and studies from the North Indian Himalayan area.

Jonathan and Beth Evans have long had a home in Almora, a hill station high in the Kumaon Foothills of the Himalayas in Northern India.  The recent and on-going freak torrential Monsoon rains have flooded and destroyed villages in their area with great loss of life and the deaths of close personal Indian friends. Avalanches and mudslides have swept houses away and buried entire families.

Says Beth:

“The current tragedy in our village and the reported damage to our house has put us in a quandary. We have discussed returning to India immediately and trying to help out in the village.  But we have now decided to send the considerable amount of money that our air fares would cost, to Almora to help out our friends and we will donate any proceeds that we make from this exhibition of our work to helping our friends to rebuild their houses and lives.  Jonathan and I have decided that we can be more effective by raising money at this end and sending it over to help our friends and neighbors in India.  Please come and see our exhibition of Batik paintings of India and help to support a good cause.  Sadly, in this world, it always seems to be the poorest areas that suffer the most in these climactic disasters; anything that we can do, as a much more affluent country, can help these poor people”.

The grand opening of the new Gallery will be at 4pm on Friday, October 8^th and will feature live music from Antonio Arguello on percussion and Patrick Valdez on guitar. Refreshments will also be provided.

There will be a Drum Workshop on Saturday October 9^th, the following morning, at Archetypos.

A former student of Datuk Jimmy Choo is making big strides with her batik and songket shoes, writes ZUHAILA SEDEK.

DO you know that in Central Market, Kuala Lumpur, there’s a shoemaker who was a student of Datuk Jimmy Choo?

Fion Poon of Perak, who got acquainted with Choo through a mutual friend, spent eight years learning the art from him.
Later, she started two lines of shoes made of batik and songket, called Ferrelle and Borsette Scarpe respectively, that have since become her signature style.

Ferrelle, which means “dare to do something” in Irish, was launched in 2008 while Borsette Scarpe, which means “handbags and shoes” in Italian, was born just last year.

These collections include mules, flat pumps, wooden clogs, open toe shoes and round-toe heels.
There are matching handbags, too.
Under Choo’s guidance, Poon created shoes with just one aim — to make Malaysians proud.

And they should be.
Even UK designer Julian MacDonald has fallen in love with her collections.

He visited her shop in Central Market and bought some Ferrelle shoes.

Tourism Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ng Yen Yen is also a customer.
Poon is bubbly in person.

Chatting over a cup of tea, the 48-year-old displayed fine manners.

“During the recession, there were not many orders but I wanted to remain productive, so I had a discussion with Datuk (Choo).

He told me to make something that was different and reflected Malaysia.

In fact, he came up with the idea for Ferrelle and Borsette Scarpe,” she says.
As these brands have a strong Malaysian flavour, they are a hit with foreigners.
“Many were surprised that these shoes and bags were made by a Malaysian.

They never thought that we had such competency.

We need top-quality products for Malaysia to be recognised for its craftsmanship,” says Poon.

Once, a Taiwanese tourist was so besotted with Poon’s shoes that she bought 15 pairs at one go.

“The shoes remind people of Malaysia,” says Poon.

“Batik and songket are a part of our heritage and we should be proud of them.

There are so many things we can do with them.”
While design is important, Poon says having the talent to make shoes is equally important.

“Good craftsmanship is rare.

I don’t just design the shoes, I hand-make them.

You need to understand shoes thoroughly to make good pairs.”
She draws inspiration from her surroundings, sketching designs daily.

Because of their designs, Ferrelle and Borsette Scarpe shoes are popular even with girls in their 20s.

“Our shoes can be worn by all, from celebrities to office workers.

Datuk always emphasises on design, comfort and quality, and I follow these three rules strictly.

He is critical of my designs,” says Poon.

It’s obvious that she has great admiration for Choo.
“I have to make a good impression with my shoes because they reflect on Datuk, too,” she says.

“It’s a challenge, but it will make my shoes better.”
So far, it’s been positive comments from the guru.

Poon started working in her family’s leather handbag factory when she was 17.

There, she gained a flair for bag-making and fine craftsmanship, thanks to demands from the factory’s international clients.
She picked up shoe-making 11 years ago.

But it was Choo who honed her skills.
She uses materials from Malaysia, Indonesia, Japan and Australia.
“I hope to be like Datuk in the future.

He has done much to promote the country and I want to do the same,” she says.

“I hope in 20 years’ time I will still be making good batik and songket shoes.”
Ferrelle and Borsette Scarpe shoes can be custom-made.

A Ferrelle goes for RM80 to RM600 while a Borsette Scarpe is from RM100 to RM2,000.

How to – wear the sarong jahit (tubular)and lepas (open ended type)

– match kebayas with sarongs
– correctly fix the kerosang and various styles of pinning
– adjust the sarong to get a figure hugging look

If you want to learn hands-on, please bring your sarong and a belt along and wear something appropriate underneath.

Highly recommended for young and not-so-young nyonyas, unsure of the art of wearing the sarong kebaya.

2. Demonstration by Aunty Kim

Lim Swee Kim, ‘National Treasure’ and famous Kebaya maker from Penang, will demonstrate the intricate art of kebaya embroidery using the Singer machine.

Future classes on nyonya embroidery conducted by Aunty Kim will be announced at the event.

3. Get-together over coffee, light refreshments and kueh.

This event is for everyone. Come and learn about the beautiful culture of the Peranakans, fraternise with the local Peranakan community here in KL and make new friends and acquaintances.

Greetings from the National Textile Museum, the latest museum and newest tourist attraction in the city of Kuala Lumpur. The Museum housed in a 114 years old heritage building is located in the historic belt of Kuala Lumpur, flanked by the Sultan Abdul Samad building and the Dayabumi building, is diagonally across the Royal Selangor Club and Dataran Merdeka.

The building is a 2 1/2 storied structure with an area of 3259 m2 and a floor area of 3145.3 m2. It was conserved and refurbished in late 2008 and eventually opened to the public on 9 January 2010. The National Textile Museum showcases a collection of rare and exquisite textiles of the multi-ethnic communities of Malaysia. There is also a fabulous display of gold ornaments and accessories in one of the four galleries found in this museum. Other facilities available here are the Museum Shop, Cafe and a Resource Centre. TANO (b. 1978) is an Indonesian-based Greek artist who resides in Yogyakarta and Greece after completing his scholarship on Batik at Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta. He studied at the Athens School of Fine Arts and has been practicing on various mediums including graffiti since then. His first solo was Concepts and Reality – Beyond Skepticism in 2009.

“I wanted to see if what I suspected could be done with batik. Now I know that this technique, better yet, this tradition has amazing possibilities. And I am surprised to realise that until now, it has been very little explored comparing to what I think an artist can actually do with it.”

a solo exhibition by Greek artist TANO. In this show, TANO incorporates various traditional techniques to materialise his visions and thoughts, such as Batik from Southeast Asia and charcoal drawings from the European tradition. He will also exhibit an artwork crafted according to the Byzantine icon painting. This is meant to help the viewers to approach the subject of the exhibition through the spectrum of different traditions of artistic creation.

This exhibition aims to take the viewer into an artistic journey beyond the limits of the human senses. The artworks present a lifelong commitment by the artist to explore the “unseen worlds”. The parallel dimensions that exist beyond the reality that our senses create.
